Prosthetic Care

Innovative prosthetic care can help you reach your  goals. One in every 190 Americans currently lives with a lost limb. But the person you generally see in televised breakthroughs is actually the exception when it comes to amputees. Only about 15% of amputees
are trauma victims and cancer survivors—these are the types of patients who most often make good candidates for high-tech prostheses. About 80% of amputations are due to vascular diseases like diabetes, who often can benefit from simpler, lower cost technology.

We understand that the most important aspect of prosthetic care is not the gadgetry or fancy technology of the prosthesis — but understanding each patient, their goals, and what will make them the most independent and functional in their daily lives.

Why use a Prosthesis?

A prosthesis is a tool that acts as an artificial replacement for a missing limb or part of a limb that can help you regain independence after your amputation. Choosing to use one, or not, depends on your personal goals. The best prosthesis is one that will help you reach your goals.

Prosthetic Focus

Any part of the body—from your ear or nose to your finger or toe—could be replaced by a prosthesis. We focus on 2 of the most common types of prostheses, which replace either a partial or complete loss of a leg:
  • Below the knee (BK, transtibial): An prosthetic lower leg attached to an intact upper leg.
  • Above the knee (AK, transfemoral): A prosthetic lower and upper leg, including a prosthetic knee.

Support for limb loss

We believe that it is critical that those patients affected by limb loss achieve their full potential through education, support and advocacy.  Whether you or someone you know are living with limb loss, talking to someone living with limb loss or limb difference helps play a vital role in living an empowered life. The Amputee Coalition of America can guide you to information and resources to help you lead a full life with limb loss.
